I saw This Christmas here in Chicago on Wednesday, the day it opened, and I must say I really enjoyed it (despite all the noise from the young teenagers in the audience). Although the majority of the audience was people of color there were some white teenagers sitting in my row and they seemed to be enjoying the movie.

I think it was strategic that there was a mixed looking kid in the movie, although she didn't have any role or part that I recall, neither did her darker brother - they both were just like there and not really in the movie. I couldn't figure this part out? If someone can shed light on why they (the two kids) did not have any real role other than being kids I would like to know. I kinda expected them to say something and be apart of the movie...

But back to the point of the strategy of the movie as I saw it was to have some crossover appeal. That was achieved with the one brother who had the white wife that was expecting a baby. But it was ironic she was absent at the end when they did the Soul train line. I expected to see her dance and she was nowhere. I think audiences, especially white moviegoers, will wonder why she did not appear at the very end. Almost the same way when you have black cast members who die off early in the film and they are gone by the ending. I wonder what happened with that or maybe she could simply not dance, who knows.

A beautiful and gritty tale about the road to redemption of
a young thug living in the slums of Johannesburg.
The film follows Tsotsi, a ruthless hot headed leader of a gang,
who rob to get what they need by any means nessesary.
At the films beginning Tsotsi's brother in crime Boston breaks down
after they rob and kill a man.Boston reacts to the crime by
asking if Tsotsi has any decency.I suspect their code was to rob..
not to kill. This question plays out in many different ways over the
course of the film. Friendships change, allegience do also.
After a haphazard robbery drops a baby into Tsotsi life,
causing him to reflect on his own past, Tsotsi is determine
to reconcile his past and do right ( at least as much as he can )
by the child. Presley Chweneyagae is brilliant asTsotsi.
We see the pain and anger reflected on his face as well as
the sadness of Tsotsi's past. Terry Pheto is captivating as
Miriam a beautiful and strong young woman who lives in Tsotsi's village and helps him to confront his haunting past.

The film is shot in a beautiful golden haze, similar to the films movie poster.
This gives the film a sense of regalness that keeps it from feeling bleak and hopeless.
I don't want to give away anymore of the plot .But I will say that I highly recommend you see this film.
Not only for it's superb acting and cinematography but also for it's storytelling. The film touches the heart
and takes a dark situation and turns it to gold.

TSOTSI is a gritty and moving portrait of an angry young man living in a state of extreme urban deprivation. His world pumps with the raw energy of "Kwaito music" - the modern beat of the ghetto that reflects his troubled state of mind.

--

Hustlin' and Ho'in for Holly'hood: The Art of Pimpin' Pickaninnies

by Min. Paul Scott

"Cuz, if you don't resist, I mean consciously, you'll fool your subconsciousness into accepting it" Arrested Development

There was a time when Shaquana Tomeka Brown would never have tolerated disrespect from anyone. Mama raised her to be too Black, too strong for that. She was known to give beat downs to her white classmates when they ridiculed her thick lips and kinky hair or when one of them tried to grab a quick feel when she walked by . But that was before she got on that midnight train from Georgia headed to Holly'hood. She was searching for fame and fortune but wound up getting turned out by Sweet Daddy Big Money Grip. At first, she resisted the daily mental and physical abuse but one day she just stopped fighting it and became the whore that white America always told her she was.....

Although the movie Hustle and Flow has received great reviews, there is an important question that must be raised. Has the self respect of Black folks sunk so low that we will embrace a movie about a 30 something year old pimp becoming a rapper like it is the Second Coming? Now before anyone asks, no, I haven't seen the movie and do not plan on seeing it. I'm not even going to get the $5 bootleg from Tyrone, the local street corner movie executive. I just can't see the aesthetic value of a flick about a pimp who has a change of heart, becomes a rapper and pens the deep philosophical lines "Whup that trick! Whup that trick!" Now I know that some of ya'll are going to come with that worn out, played out sermon about how we should support Black movies because if we do...it will give thousands of Black people jobs/end hunger in Africa/keep Lil Kim out of jail..etc, etc and so forth. But the irony is, although the movie is being promoted as a "John Singleton Blackbuster," the film was actually written and directed by a white dude, Chris Brewer. (Read the fine print if you don't believe me.) So why would a white dude have an interest in the gospel of the ghetto ?

There has always been a fascination by white America with Black sexuality from the white folks that used to cut off Black men's genitals and sell them for souvenirs to the white business men who drive around tha hood looking for a piece of brown sugar. But today they legitimize their erotic fantasies by having mental orgasms in the comfort of movie theaters as they live vicariously through the Black Mandingo on the screen subduing his latest conquest.

While it is assumed that "Black" movies are made for Black audiences, what the industry really wants is that almighty crossover dollar. To them, the Black dollar is a cheap $5 crackhead trick, while the white dollar is a $500 dollar a night, high class hooker. They see the Black community as a chance to make an easy buck; a bunch of feeble-minded pickaninnees who will stand in line for hours to see a black and white movie shot with a cheap camcorder as long as it has a crunk soundtrack. They also know that if they want to get a bunch of Black folks to load up the church van after Sunday service, all they have to do is to put one "Thank ya Jesus!!!!" line in the movie and half a verse from an ole negro spiritual. That's all it takes to get Black folks jumpin for joy and testifyin' at a movie premiere. (Remember that old Sista that knocked your popcorn over when she started shoutin' during Diary of a Mad Black Woman?)

So they know how to get the black dollar but their question is will it play in Peoria? After the first wave of Black folks bumrushes opening weekend, will middle aged liberal white folks be walking around a month later bragging to their Black friends that after watching Hustle and Flow they now have a unique understanding of the Black experience? And how they hadn't gotten such a warm fuzzy feeling from a movie since the first time they saw Roots?

The Holly'hood executives are on a quest to make "Ho" a household word in suburban "hoods" across America. Although the Pimp image has been marketed to Lil Saquan Johnson for years, the marketing miracle will be when Lil Bobby Rutabaga is walking around the house with a greasy perm and a Big Gulp sized Pimp Cup singing "Pimpin' aint easy...anything goes when it comes to ho's" while smackin little Suzie on the booty.

We must not allow the industry' s propaganda machine, made up of million dollar hype men, professional pimp apologists and embedded journalists bamboozle us into confusing the issue. The issue is not the cinematic quality of the film nor whether the star of the film lives happily -ever -after when after seeing the error of his pimp slappin' ways, he becomes the award winning author of children's bedtime stories like "The Joys and Pains of Being a Pimp." The issue is how long are we going to let the worst parts of Black behavior be paraded before the world like a ghetto freak show.

What happened to Black folks who used to speak out against negative images. Somewhere along the line Black folks just stopped caring and figured it was better to go along to get along. It's time for us to start giving a darn again ! If we let this film go without protest we will be cursed with a whole year of sequels and copy cat movies about the reluctant pimp such as "I Know Why the Caged Pimp Sings" while our Black filmmakers with positive messages struggle to eat.

There is a lot we can learn from Hip Hop, as a rapper will check another Brotha for even the slightest diss on a CD. Yet, we let Holly'hood diss an entire race without even one raised Black Fist of protest. Unlike other ethnic groups, we are too slow to react to disrespect. We are the only race or ethnic group in the universe that has to have a tank parked in our living room before we admit that we are under attack! We have to once again protect our most valuable resources: our pride and our self-respect. We can never let those things be sold to the highest bidder.

In the immortal words of the great funk philosopher George Clinton "Mind your wants cause there's someone who wants your mind."

Min. Paul Scott represents the Messianic Afrikan Nation in Durham NC. He can be reached at (919) 451-8283 email: minpaulscott@yahoo.com website: members.blackplanet.com/THE-MYD

"G" the Movie Hits Mid-Atlantic

This is part of an open call to drum up support for G, a new movie currently showing on the Mid-Atlantic coast. G is a contemporary African-American romance inspired by the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald story The Great Gatsby. It is a tragic love story that the Hollywood Studios chose to pass on (despite outstanding reviews) because they didn't feel that the African-American community would show up to support a movie outside of the stereotype-laden films with which they felt the community identified. The producers of the film have set out to prove them wrong! G is a rich, vibrant film starring Blair Underwood (L.A. Law, Madea's Family Reunion), Richard T. Jones (Collateral, Judging Amy) and Andre Royo (Shaft, The Wire) that shows people of color living in an upper-class setting and dealing with the trappings of money, fame and unrequited love. In portraying such a world, it celebrates the diversity of African-American culture, something we see too little of in film.

In order for more movies of this nature to get made, we must demonstrate that the African-American community will support them. The film opens FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th in Memphis, Washington D.C., Baltimore and Norfolk, VA. If you live in these vicinities, GO SEE "G" THIS WEEKEND! In addition FORWARD THIS EMAIL to anyone and everyone you know who will go see it and help get people into the theaters for the OPENING WEEKEND. It is up to everybody to get the message out there! Films like this should be made and it is about time that Hollywood takes notice. For more information about the movie and theater locations go to www.gthemovie.c om.

Set amidst the grandeur of the ultra elite Hamptons, G follows self-made millionaire and rap mogul Summer G (Richard T. Jones) on a journey to regain what he desires most – the love of his life (Chenoa Maxwell), now married to a wealthy and philandering Wallstreeter (Blair Underwood). Having built his thriving empire from the ground up, Summer G would relinquish it all for the promise of rekindling a romance with his one true love. Urban music writer, Tre, (Andre Royo) spends the summer chronicling the lifestyle of this complex rap mogul for an article on the rise of African-American prominence linked to Hip Hop in the Hamptons. Without malice or intent, this writer brings these lovers together while simultaneously pulling their worlds apart. G is directed by Christopher Scott Cherot, who made his directorial debut with the independent film “Hav Plenty", and written by Cherot and Charles E. Drew, Jr..
Laurnea @ Temple Bar

"Laurneá has the lyrics of a woman who has truly experienced the ups and downs of love...and the voice and heart of an angel." --India.Arie

The Temple Bar is located at 1026 Wilshire Blvd in Santa Monica. Tickets to Laurneá Show 11:30 PM show on September 30th are $12 To reach the Temple Bar call (310) 393-6611. For more information on Laurneá please call Monifa Brown (973) 579-7763 ext 26/mbrown@shanachie.

Considering soulful singer/songwriter extraordinaire Laurneá's (pronounced LORE-NAY) many accomplishments, it's hard to believe that in America at least she has remained an underground phenomenon. The thirty-something songbird has collaborated with the likes of India.Arie, Rachelle Ferrell, Patti Labelle, Omar, Bobby McFerrin, toured with Maxwell, appeared in Spike Lee films and starred on Broadway. Unlike the many one- dimensional singers on the pop/urban landscape today, Laurneá’s vocals are multi-faceted. Blessed with an impressive range, she sings almost whisper- soft one moment and then edgy, soulful or soaring the next. On Friday, September 30, Laurneá perform a special performance at the Temple Bar, highlighting music from her new CD, The Collection.

A former vocalist for Arrested Development and Loose Ends, Laurneá seemed poised for stardom with the release of her stunning major label solo debut in 1997. Despite significant radio and video play on two singles from the album, she didn't have a breakout hit and with her musical vision not fitting the major- label template, decided to release future albums independently. Mixing elements from R&B, jazz, hip-- hop, electronica and pop, Laurneá then released three albums on her own imprint in the U.S., while arranging major label releases abroad. These albums, which sustained a devoted cult following, reveal her to be a unique singer and songwriter whose talent crosses stylistic borders and genres. The Collection brings together fourteen of her finest tracks, drawn from all four of her albums recorded thus far. To her fans, this album delivers the ultimate essence of her talent; to those just discovering her, the beauty and depth of her music will be a revelation.

Laurneá was born Laurneá Wilkerson in San Diego, California but was raised in Omaha, Nebraska and moved to New York at age sixteen when she landed a part in the Broadway show “The Wiz.” Her musical talent was no surprise as she came from a musical family, her mother had sung with Sam Cooke and four of her sisters also sing. Moving to Los Angeles, her talent quickly led to other opportunities. She became a member of Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra from 1989-1991 and in 1990 joined UK-pop/R&B hitmakers Loose Ends as a vocalist. She joined hit- making rap/hip-hop collective Arrested Development and relocated to Atlanta where she was offered solo recording deal by Tracey Edmonds (Yab Yum Records) as well as noted producer Dallas Austin. Laurneá signed with Yab Yum and her solo debut CD Betta Listen was released in 1997. Laurneá released II, her second album, in 2000 and it clearly affirmed the promise of her debut. With the release of her third album New Territory in 2002 she presented an intimate and moving portrait of the joy and pain of a relationship, specifically her marriage to and subsequent divorce from one of the members of Arrested Development. In 2004 her fourth album, I Remember, was released internationally and in a limited edition on her own label.

Has anyone else checked out this DVD?
It contains 3 shorts from the continent by female directors:
"Uno's World" - Bridget Pickering (Namibia)
"Hang Time" - Ngozi Onwurah (Nigeria)
"Raya" - Zulfar Otto-Sallies (south Africa)
I watched the DVD this weekend, but will refrain from commenting until I know someone wants to discuss it.

I'm new to tribe.net and loaded with opinions on these films, also some previously discussed. Strong acting chops is key for me, eg.: Dexter Gordon in "'Round Midnight", Lázaro Ramos in "Madame Satã", Regina King in "Ray", Ailton Graça in "Contra Todos", Queen Latifah in "Set It Off", Rena Owens & Temeura Morrison in "Once Were Warriors", Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball" and Terrence Dashon Howard in just about everything he's done.

Contrary to what a few others here think, "Cidade de Deus" is a masterpiece IMHO. While most of the attention has gone to the director Fernando Meirelles, the movie's novice young leads were seriously robbed of much deserved praise. I suppose that many critics are misguided in believing that if you're from the hood, you can act like a hoodie. Douglas Silva & Leandro Firmino portrayed the same person as a kid and as a young adult respectively with unforgettable magnetism.

I'm always down for going to the theater to check out indie flicks, and also have a fairly decent DVD collection. Sorry, no loaning or borrowing; but viewings at my place are cool, especially during the cool days & long nights of fall/winter. As said before, I'm new to tribe, so feel free to add me as a friend. Is that how this works? Peace

City of God: Tragic Brilliance But Far From Unique

What's most remarkable about "City of God" is how dramatically similar the circumstances and conditions are to those that are present in Los Angeles, Guatemala City, New York, Port Au Prince, Chicago, Miami, Mexico City, San Pedro Sula, New Orleans, Baghdad, Palestine, Johannesburg, Bombay, etc. The tragic brilliance of this film is that it's not a unique or even original story at all.

City of God, the film, depicts the same hell that is described so vividly in the so-called "Gangsta Rap" from African American and Latin American youth and in it's peer art forms elsewhere around the world (e.g., Ragga/Dancehall). City of God, the housing project, is simply one in millions of similar housing "projects" (experiments) that create horrendous conditions that simultaneously stretches and degrades human imagination to degrees that result in a shocking devaluation of all life.

For some strange, sad reason, poor people of color suffer similar recurring tragedies and pathologies that are far more complex than the typical "they are animals, imprison them" socio-reduction of reactionaries and conservatives and aren't nearly as 'romantic' as some apologists and liberals might have us believe.

I watch films like City of God, Menace II Society, Pixote, Salaam Bombay, Carlito's Way, etc. not just for entertainment, but in the hopes extracting gems from the storytelling and getting closer to understanding why some people make the choices they make, and in the hopes of discovering why it always seems to be the poor Black and Brown people who die in the streets.
